About Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was a slave abolitionist and humanitarian. Born into slavery in the USA in approximately 1822 her amazing life story would making a compelling film. In 1849, Tubman managed to escape slavery before returning to rescue her family and slowly, one group at a time, bringing dozens of other slaves to freedom.
When the American Civil War began Tubman became the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war when she guided the Combahee River Raid that liberated more than 750 slaves.
After the war, Tubman retired to the family home New York, where she cared for her aging parents and became active in the women’s suffrage movement in New York. Near the end of her life, she lived in a home for elderly African Americans that she had helped found years earlier.
